Treating Adjustment Disorder

Adjustment disorder is a mental health condition that is triggered by a significant life event or stressor. It is a unique condition because it occurs as a reaction to a specific event rather than a long-term mental illness. Unlike other mental health conditions, adjustment disorder symptoms typically appear within three months of the triggering event and can last up to six months after the event has ended. However, in some cases, symptoms can persist for longer periods. The symptoms of adjustment disorder can vary widely, but commonly include emotional distress, such as feelings of sadness, anxiety, or worry, as well as behavioural changes like social withdrawal, irritability, or reckless behaviour. It is important to note that adjustment disorder can affect people of all ages and backgrounds and can be triggered by any significant life change or event.
