Treating Personality Disorders

Personality disorders refer to a group of mental health conditions that are characterized by inflexible and pervasive patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that deviate significantly from the expectations of one’s culture. These patterns of behaviour are typically stable over time and across situations, and they often cause significant distress and impairment in social, occupational, or other areas of functioning. There are several types of personality disorders, each with its own set of defining characteristics. For example, borderline personality disorder is characterized by unstable emotions, impulsive behaviour, and intense and unstable relationships with others. Narcissistic personality disorder, on the other hand, is characterized by an inflated sense of self-importance, a lack of empathy for others, and a need for admiration. The causes of personality disorders are not yet fully understood, but they are thought to be related to a combination of genetic, environmental, and social factors.
